Biobot
The biobot is an art project to create a cybernetic life form by combining biology, data processing, and machine construction.
In the multi-year art-research project Biobot, a group of scientists and experts, together with an artist, are exploring, experimenting, and developing neural tissue that can process input signals and control a robot. The author, along with scientists, grows fat cells into neural cells, which are then differentiated and grown on a multielectrode array (MEA) to create a simple hybrid organelle that can control the movement of the robot. Through a sensitive and complex sensory system, the signal from the neurons is converted from analog to digital, amplified, and then used by AI to find the most suitable form for the bot and for its movement.
To determine the shape of the Biobot, the AI program uses output signals from the neurons and compares them with possible leg movements in a library of movements of different arthropods. From these comparisons, the AI infers the appropriate number of joints and limbs and proposes the most optimal skeletal constitution for movement. The results are manifested in the forms of unpredictable zoomorphic bodies that the program offers based on the possibilities of movement, which the artist selects according to their interest in the handicapped movement.
Algorithmic searching for the shape of the bot based on stimulated biological activity, through iterations of signals from the brain organelle, is shown to be an uncontrolled evolutionary process. This opens up possibilities for hybrid bio-cybernetic life with its own aesthetics, intelligence, and movement.
